Purple Foxglove

Purple Foxglove, Original Photograph by Kim A. Bailey
Bar Harbor, Maine

Purple foxglove, scientifically known as Digitalis purpurea, is a stunning and iconic biennial or perennial plant known for its tall spikes of tubular flowers. These flowers, which bloom in various shades of purple ranging from deep violet to soft lavender, are arranged along the length of the stalk in a distinctive vertical pattern.

The purple foxglove’s trumpet-shaped blooms are adorned with delicate speckles or spots inside the throat of each flower, adding to their allure and visual interest. The flowers rise above a rosette of lush green foliage, creating a striking contrast against the backdrop of the garden or woodland landscape.
