The Green Heron (Butorides virescens) is a small, stocky wading bird found in wetlands, marshes, and along the edges of lakes, rivers, and ponds throughout North and Central America. The Green Heron is one of the few bird species known to use tools. It occasionally drops small objects like feathers, twigs, or insects onto the water’s surface to lure fish closer—a behavior called “bait fishing.” The Green Heron is a beautiful example of adaptability and intelligence in the bird world, making it a favorite among bird enthusiasts and nature lovers.

Shown in the Wellington Art Society Dreamscapes Juried Exhibition in the Fall of 2025.
